Nanette Walker Smith, M.Ed., RVT, CVT, LVT - VSPN Content Director & VSPN CE Coordinator
I've been in the veterinary field for over 20 years, registered in CA since 1988, certified in Florida and Wyoming, and now licensed in Alaska. Since my husband is active duty US Air Force, we are currently stationed in Alaska. We have two daughters and one white German shepherd. I graduated from U of CA, Davis with a BS in Zoology, then from Cosumnes River College with AS degrees in Animal Health Technology and Environmental Design-Architectural. I completed my Master's of Education (emphasis on adult education and community college learning) in August 2006 through the University of Central Florida. I taught at the AVMA accredited Brevard Community College Veterinary Technology Program in Cocoa, FL from 2000-2005, worked in a mixed animal practice in Wyoming from 1999-2000, and at Sacramento Veterinary Surgical Services in Sacramento, CA (1987-1998). In Florida I served as the corresponding secretary for the FVTA; in Wyoming I co-founded the Wyoming Veterinary Technician Association and have served as the president, past president, and now advisor; in CA, I served on my local VT association in all capacities over a period of 12 years; on the CA state association (CVMA RVT Committee) finishing as it's Chairperson; and have served a term as Vice President of NAVTA. VSPN has been there through it all for over 10 years. The availability of current information in our ever-changing world of veterinary medicine on the web is a wonderful resource and learning experience for all staff members. I think the greatest thing we can be is happy with what we have chosen to do with our lives; VIN and VSPN make that a reality. E-mail Nanette@vspn.org

I was born and raised in Pekin, a small town in Central Illinois. I've been in the veterinary field since 1991. I was attending Iowa State University, acquiring a B.S. in zoology, when I started working at a small animal clinic in Johnston, Iowa, where I still work today as technician manager. I am currently attending Cedar Valley College Distance Education Veterinary Technology Program to become a credentialed technician. I am very active in the Central Iowa Veterinary Technician Association, having served as both secretary and newsletter editor. I am also very active in canine sports; I currently show my vizsla in obedience and do pet therapy work. At VSPN, I help update everyone's database file so you can email any updates to me! Charlotte Waack, AA, AAS, BS, CVT, RVT - VIN/VSPN/VSPN CE Member Services
I started in the veterinary field in 1990 as an assistant in a very small clinic. I started volunteering with the Veterinary Information Network (VIN) somewhere around 1995 in their Pet Care Forum as a chat host. While with the Pet Care Forum, I was promoted to leader of the dog chats and forum leader of the libraries there. When the Pet Care Forum moved from AOL, I made the move over to VSPN. I never realized how that move would change my life! Through the chats on VSPN I learned about the Veterinary Technology Distance Learning program at St. Petersburg College in Florida and in 2004 I graduated with an AAS degree and became credentialed as a technician in the states of Illinois and Missouri. This had been my dream since I worked with my first credentialed technician in my early years of practice! I live in the country near the western border of Illinois with my husband Jeff, an Australian shepherd named Schrader and a DSH cat named Simon Cowell. I am a member of NAVTA, the Veterinary Technician Association of Illinois and Missouri Veterinary Technician Association. In my spare time I enjoy music, practicing cello, gardening, remodeling our 100+ year old house and researching the internet for the latest gossip connected with American Idol! I am currently employed by VIN/VSPN working in the CE Member Services area. I enjoy working with students here on VSPN and Friday night chats. VSPN has so much to offer....CE, support, idea exchanging and networking....and it is all at your fingertips! You can reach me at: Charlotte@vspn.org
Debbie Bess, BS, OM
I have been in the veterinary field for 12 years. After graduating from UC Davis with a B.S. in biology, I returned to Chico, CA where I was born and raised. Then 7 years ago, I moved to northern NV. While my official title is office manager, I perform receptionist, technician/assistant and maintenance duties on a daily basis. I have worked in numerous small animal practices from multiple doctors with 20+ staff members to 1 doctor, 2 staff members and no computer. I have experienced numerous doctor and ownership changes. I have worked through yearly associate doctor changes at one clinic, a separation of my hospital from a group of hospitals and the sale of my current clinic, which included the old veterinarian retiring, becoming the 1st satellite clinic to much larger hospital in town and two veterinarian changes since the purchase. I am both a CE and freebie junkie and love when the two combine, like membership to VSPN. My motto is: the more I learn, the better I can help my patients and my clients and my coworkers (whether it be from the veterinary guru's, my colleagues on-line throughout the world, or another industry). My special interests are internal marketing and educating clients on preventive care. Some say I am an abnormality in the veterinary field as I have just one cat, one very spoiled cat, named Jared Maynard Fuzzbucket, the III. My life outside veterinary medicine revolves around my 11 year old neice and new baby nephew. You can reach me at: Dbess@vspn.org
Darci Palmer, BS, LVT, VTS (Anesthesia)
I worked as a veterinary assistant in a mixed animal practice for 8 years before becoming a licensed veterinary technician in 2000. I obtained a Bachelor degree in Animal Science from Washington State University in 1999. After college I went to work for an exclusive equine practice for just over a year before finding my dream job working at a university. I was hired as an anesthesia technician at Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in 2001. At first I was a little hesitant to work in anesthesia but thanks to the excellent clinicians that I worked with I learned to love all aspects of anesthesia. I developed a real passion for teaching and I also liked the fact that I learned something new every day. I was fortunate enough to obtain my VTS in anesthesia in 2006. My husband is a veterinarian and part of the Army Veterinary Corps. Due to my husband's active duty status, I had to reluctantly quit my job but am now enjoying being a stay at home mom to our sons. Our family also consists of a Dalmatian named J.D.; a Labrador named Gimli and 2 Quarter Horses. Please feel free to contact me at darci@vspn.org.

I stumbled into the veterinary field back in 1993, working as an assistant when I started college. I had intended a career in wildlife management but I decided I liked the availability of work and the hands-on of veterinary care. I continued working at a variety of day practices and weekends and holidays at emergency clinics. After several years, I could sense the winds of change blowing and decided I should get certified as a technician. I started with St. Petersburg College's on-line program and finished at Brevard Community College. Soon after graduation I became clinic supervisor at the National Audubon Society Center for Birds of Prey. After a couple years, I noticed a senior veterinary technician position opening at the Mecca of the bird of prey world. So I packed my stuff and moved from sunny Florida to freezing cold Minnesota and currently work at The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota. During the winter months when the birds have migrated down south, I work at the Veterinary Medical Center at the U of M keeping up my dog and cat skills. At home I have my two cats and the world's greatest stress reliever, my Pontiac GTO (did I mention I'm a car nut!). Email: bickf011@umn.edu
Robynn Brannen, RVT
Prior to my veterinary technology career, I worked as a freelance news correspondent for an Illinois newspaper, a graphic artist, and pr/marketing/outreach “guru” for a government job training program. I also worked for a non-profit organization that assists children with disabilities, on a crisis intervention hotline, and as a computer systems administrator. I attended Los Angeles Pierce College from 2001-2004 to earn my associate’s degree in science, and take the necessary courses to qualify for the RVT boards here in CA. During that time, I worked full-time, and raised a wonderful daughter. I graduated in 2004, took my boards and have been an RVT since then. I believe that communicating with clients is a very important part of our jobs as technicians. I love explaining to a client why a fecal analysis will help her protect her pet AND her 2 pre-school children. I love encouraging a client by saying that if he/she can just manage two aspects of home dental care, the pet will be healthier, and they’ll save money in the long run. Mostly, I feel that when a technician or assistant can effectively explain medical care, the pet, the client, and the practice ALL win. You can reach me at rlbrannen@earthlink.net.

I received my BS in Animal Science from Virginia Tech in 1999 and am currently a Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (RLATG) and a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in the State of Maryland. After working in small animal practice for 10 years, I joined a large research university in 2001 as their head animal care technician. I had the pleasure of working with laboratory animals of all species, from rodents to primates (and everything in between). In 2004, I joined the National Institutes of Health as an Animal Care and Use Coordinator, helping to regulate the use of animals in research and ensuring compliance with all applicable guidelines and laws. Recently, I accepted a position with the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC). Our mission is to promote the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary assessment and accreditation programs. I share my Old Town Alexandria, Virginia home with two cats, Chloe & Sophie. You can reach me at: hbreighner@aaalac.org

I am currently from Southern New Hampshire. I am originally from NY and started out my life as an engineer. I have a BS in Civil Engineering and an MBA. I always wanted to work with animals, my family and friends convinced me it would be too sad or gory. Years later, after working in Business Administration, Financial Analysis and Software Engineering, I went back to school at the New Hampshire Community Technical College to study Veterinary Technology. I am now a CVT/LVT in Mass, Maine, and NH. I work in a small animal practice, and teach in the Vet Tech Program at NHCTC. In my non-work life, I actively train my Labrador retrievers in obedience, rally, agility, conformation, and field work. I also teach rally and CGC classes. I'm a CGC evaluator for the AKC, breeder/puppy contact for the Lab Club of Greater Boston, a member of APDT and SVBT, and I'm a board member and the webmaster for the New Hampshire Vet Tech Association. In my non-animal life, I'm a Girl Scout leader for Cadettes and Seniors (the junior high and high school girls) and I share my life with my husband Mike, and our 3 Labradors, 1 cat, and some 20 odd tropical fish. I am a graduate of St. Petersburg College's A.S. Veterinary Technology Distance Education program and a current student in the baccalaureate program. I am currently participating in the technician internship program with the AMC in New York. Most of my veterinary work experience has been in emergency and small animal practices with duties in most areas of the hospital including: receptionist, kennel manager, administrative, website content and design, nursing, marketing, training, and as the AAHA Accreditation Inspection Coordinator. I am a member of the Florida Veterinary Technician Association and I also serve as the State Representative to NAVTA on behalf of the FVTA. I am a member of NAVTA and the Society of Veterinary Behavior Technicians (SVBT). My philosophy is that no matter how old or young you are in this profession, there is always so much more to learn. Thanks to VSPN, we all have the resources to stay on the path of learning to better serve our employers, clients, and above all, the pets we look after on a daily basis. My family consists of a terrier mix dog, 3 adult children Jon, Sarah and Ben and my husband Doug. The order listed is not in order of importance! I graduated from Michigan State's VT program in 1976. I have worked in a general practice, a university, a spay/neuter clinic, as a volunteer at our local shelter (over 10 years) and currently at a specialty practice in surgery/anesthesia. I have always loved being a technician- even when no one knew who we were- but stayed home while raising my children and let my license lapse. If anyone is considering this, please e-mail me, do NOT do it. In 2001 I attended the WVC and spoke with NAVTA representatives who convinced me to get my license renewed. After a year of paperwork, (did I mention that I am very persistent?) I succeeded in being able to add CVT to my name! I have since added RVT (Indiana) and am trying to support technicians everywhere. I have seen this profession change over the years and it is still a job I love doing every day. I am also a CE junkie and you will probably see me at a conference each year; you can teach an old dog new tricks. You can email me at: bfeller@insightbb.com

Since 1996 I have offered classes for dogs and their owners in obedience, agility RallyO and more recently, stockdog handling. In 1998 I began offering private consultations in behavior modification techniques for cat and dog owners. During my free time, I enjoy competing with my own dogs in obedience, agility, RallyO and stockdog trials. With 4 dogs, 3 cats and a wonderful husband, I stay very busy! I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and grew up in rural North Eastern Pennsylvania. My grandparents had a dairy farm and I grew up with animals. I tried to ignore my devotion to animals and became a music major. I moved to North Carolina in 1985 and never left. After 8 years, I couldn't ignore my devotion any longer. I graduated from Central Carolina Community College in 1993 with an AAS in Veterinary Medical Technology. I worked in a local emergency clinic and was fascinated with the exotic cases we saw. My husband has been involved in research since we graduated from school. After 5 years in private practice, I made the switch to research. I worked as the manager of veterinary services for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for 4 ½ years. I am currently the Operations Manager for an independent contract research company. I am an active member of NAVTA, AALAS, LAMA and serve as the secretary for the newly formed AIMVT. I am active in disaster preparedness in my local community, the NC State Animal Response Team and am a member of VMAT 3. During my spare time, I enjoy NASCAR racing and spending time with my brood. You can reach me at: hallfamily2005@netscape.com
Vicki Hayden, CVT
I'm a Florida native, and a graduate of the SPJC program, which, at that time, included practical experience through the veterinary college at the University of Florida (UF). After graduation, I worked as a clinical/nursing tech for an equine surgical and referral practice for 6 years followed by 14 years at a at a large reference lab. My preferred specialty is exotic hematology, but it's a tiny niche, so I keep reaching to widen my scope. My husband works at UF, and we share our household with a tyrant Abyssinian … or maybe I should say he deigns to share his household with us! I'm very interested in promoting vet techs as licensed allied health professionals, and would also like to start a specialty for Clinical Pathology technicians. Otherwise, my interests include sailing, reading, model trains, MBTI personality profiling (INTx), and whatever sundry miscellany attracts my curiosity. Email: exotec@critterpath.com
Debbie Hembroff, RVT, CVT
I am 1990 graduate of Animal Health Technology, Fairview College, Alberta, Canada. I live in Calgary, Alberta with my family, which includes my partner Wayne, son Christopher, two cats, a Rosella parakeet and a horse of course. My career has been mainly centered in an emergency practice where I have weathered two changes of ownership and worked with many different veterinarians. I do not think of myself as a specialist, but I am a technician who confesses to being a "CE junkie". I have had the opportunity to publish articles in Veterinary Technician Magazine on equine topics and have enjoyed the experience immensely. In the future I hope to explore this career avenue further, as I believe those technicians with a strong understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of our animal charges are better able to play an essential role in owner education within their community as well as the practices they work for. I believe VSPN offers us a wonderful forum for discussion at a national level as well as the continual education needed to keep up with the rapidly changing world around us. I can be reached at Hembroff@telus.net.

I graduated from the University of Wisconsin LaCrosse in 2001 with a BS degree in Biomedical Sciences. I then ventured to Minnesota to attend Argosy University and I received my AAS in Veterinary Technology and became certified in 2003. I did my internship at the Emergency Clinics of St. Paul and Oakdale and continued to work there for about a year until I decided to take a position at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center in the Cardiology department in June of 2004. My Cardiology family consists of one other technician (Kristin- who keeps me sane), two cardiologists, 3 residents and students which come and go. Currently, I am busy studying and writing case logs in hopes to take the cardiology specialty board exams in 2008 at the ACVIM. My family at home consists of Randy, my very supportive and wonderful husband; Britta, my cuddly and problematic Irish setter; and a baby that will be joining us in May of 2007. My excitement for the animal field didn’t come until 1995. I volunteered at a local animal shelter one Thursday evening and the rest is history. After a few years of volunteering, I decided to attend SPJC and obtain my AS in Veterinary Technology. Currently, I am licensed in both Illinois and California. Although I am a Florida native, I am now happy to call San Diego home – where I live with my husband and our 2 cats. VSPN keeps me in touch with others in the field and is a great venue for asking those questions that you just can’t seem to get the answers to elsewhere. I have a BA in Anthropology and enjoy geocaching when I’m not helping fix all the critters in the county. Shelter Medicine has a special place in my heart and I am forever grateful to my husband for pushing me to go to the shelter on that first day. Email me at: jklotch@yahoo.com

I'm a 2007 graduate of Parkland College's veterinary technology program. I have one 25 year old Arabian horse, Fire, and share ownership of two dogs: Timmy (basset X) and Daisy (beagle) - both Parkland 'adjunct professors emeriti', along with nail-clipping duties for my extended family's dogs: Cutter and Zorra (smooth fox terriers). The daughter of a professional kennel manager, groomer, & show handler, I grew up with dogs, birds, and fish, & gained equine experience while working as a feeder/turn out worker for a boarding barn in Illinois. My B.S degree and graduate work in analytical chemistry led me to the fields of technical training, writing, and support, marketing, product line & sales management, & field service (installation & on-site customer conflict resolution), along with an enormous amount of business travel! I ADORE students & customers - even the difficult ones! Annie, Parker (retired racing greyhounds), and Faxman (retired smooth fox show dog) brought me to veterinary technology. All three dogs passed from various cancers within the span of 17 months. During this time, then-20 year old Fire also incurred a severe bowed tendon injury. The enormous demands of their nursing care was a vortex that led me back to veterinary medicine as a (long ago dismissed) career option; veterinary technology offers a pragmatic, interesting place for me to serve. I have worked as a managing chemist in a university veterinary toxicology laboratory, and now work in the Equine Medicine and Surgery unit of the Large Animal Clinic at the University of Illinois. I'm a member of NAVTA, VTAI, and AAEVT, and interested in pursuing certification in Equine. I have a pet sitting business, and am an active advocate for senior pet adoption. I truly look forward to serving the VSPN boards to the best of my ability, and learning from all who grace VSPN! Contact me at kjkroha@hotmail.com.
Audrey Kupczak, CVT
My name is Audrey Kupczak. I graduated from Joliet Jr. College in May 2005 with an Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology. I passed my board exam in August 2005 and became a CVT. I have been in the veterinary field now for over 7 years. Most of my experience in this field has been with exotic animals. The practices that I worked with in the Chicagoland area were all exclusively exotic pets. I have only recently started in day practice with dogs and cats since moving out to Utah and I am one of the lead technicians for this clinic. I love hiking with my husband, I read a lot and I recently learned how to crochet. I have four ferrets (Matilda, Stanley, Edgar and Abner) and they never fail to brighten my day. I believe strongly in continuing my education, as well as, bringing this information to the staff that I work with. You can reach me at akkup@comcast.net

Marilee Muzatko, CVT
I started as a veterinary assistant in 1972 in a small animal practice in California and worked there while earning my BS. After graduation, I turned what was supposed to be a short break before entering vet school, into a 22-year sidetrack. I traveled about, working in marine animal rehab and research, programming, studying alternative medicine (human) and eventually owning a small business. In 2000, I returned to veterinary medicine and completed the Veterinary Technology Program at Portland Community College in 2003. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to VSPN for playing a role in helping me become a successful technician. If I had a question while in school, someone here always had an answer. I haven’t left PCC yet; I work there one day a week on the program staff. I enjoy the challenge of staying one step ahead of the students – their endless questions encourage me to keep learning. While still in tech school I started working at DoveLewis Emergency & CC Animal Hospital and am now a full-time ICU technician. I fell into this job and I love it! Nothing else I have ever done gives me as much satisfaction as day of nursing. All my senses, all my emotions, and all my skills are fully used each day. My indulgent husband of 21 years, who hardly ever minds that I am doing “just one more thing for the animals”, and an odd-eyed white cat, who always minds about those other animals, share their home with me. email: marilee@muzatko.us.

I recently returned to California, having lived in Texas for the past 22 years. I was raised on a working cattle ranch in the San Joaquin Valley in California, and have ridden horses all my life. Having received my Bachelor's degree from University of Colorado and San Diego State, I went back to obtain a degree in Veterinary Technology. I graduated from Cedar Valley College with honors in 1985 and took my State and National Boards, receiving my RVT designation that same year. I ride and participate in Three Day Eventing when I can, love rehabilitation work with horses, equine anesthesia, and working the ICU with foals. I also love to cook! I currently do consulting with equine practices and Eklin Medical Systems through my own business -Pegasus Consulting. I am married (husband, Jeff), and have two children, Brooke (22) and Sam (20) who are soccer enthusiasts. And my true friends: Slew (my retired TB at my Mom's ranch), my 2 Aussies, Sassy and Tess, and my two new kittens, BK and Prada. You can reach me at dreeder@cox.net.
Cindy Remick, CVPM
My dad taught me when I was young that I could do anything I wanted to. One of my favorite pictures I have is me with a hammer. My mom always knew that I should work with animals. Following high school I became a Veterinary Assistant and subsequently a Practice Administrator. Our state allows for testing and credentialing OTJ LVT’s but I elected to go the management route. Combining the focuses instilled by my parents (combination of hammer and animals), under the encouragement of my DVM husband and following years of experience as an office and practice manager I decided to pursue my CVPM, which I achieved in October, 2007. My particular interests are constantly changing as I work with mentors, but include facilitation, team building, HR issues, and the various legalities of veterinary practice. While lacking professional degrees I hold a wide variety of experiences that afford me the opportunity to view the various aspects of Veterinary Medicine from all perspectives. On a personal note I have 2 Golden Retrievers (PLEASE someone come and play ball with them), a Coon Hound mix, 3 cats (one with multiple health issues) and a Pionus Parrot. You can reach me at remicksnwa@comast.net.
Danielle Russ, LVT, BS, BA, AS
Growing up on a successful horse breeding farm in Virginia, I was exposed an array of animals, as well as being responsible for their care. So it isn't any surprise, that I love animals and veterinary medicine. Combining my two passions doesn't make for much free time especially when you are footing the bill, but it does make for an interesting life. While completing a double major (Biochemistry and Chemistry) at NCSU, I worked at a progressive small animal hospital outside of Raleigh, and at the vet school in virology and cardiology, and I was a freelance hunter/jumper rider/trainer/instructor. Being a bit burnt out on school after graduating, I postponed vet school, moved back to VA, got married, bought a farm, started my own business (www.brydelle.com), started working at a small animal veterinary specialty hospital, and went back to school (SPC Distance Program) for my vet tech degree. In June 2004, I officially became a LVT. I continued at the multi-specialty hospital (internal medicine and cardiology) as head tech and practice manager for seven GREAT years, and just recently moved to a cardiology only practice in Virginia Beach. I have cut back my hours dramatically, only working 3 days a week, as my horse business is growing fast. I have also started the long arduous process of preparing to become a licensed USEF judge for hunter/jumpers over the past two years. My family consists of me, my wonderful husband, Bayard (9yr old MN JRT), Cassie (8 yr old F Great Dane), Artie (20 yr old, QH gelding), and Colby (5 yr old, TBx Gelding). I have frequented VSPN for several years now, and am excited to be part of the VSPN Team. Email dani@brydelle.com
Oriana Scislowicz, VA
I have been working in the veterinary field for a little over a year now as a VA, and am passionate about pursuing a career in veterinary technology. I recently applied for the BRCC program that will begin this summer in my area(distance learning program). I currently am also in the process of completing my Bachelors of Science in Psychology at VCU, and should be graduating at the end of this year(Dec '08). I try to stay on top of any continuing education opportunities I can find in veterinary medicine, and is partly why I found such an interest in VSPN. I have been a member of NAVTA and plan on hopefully renewing this year in the student chapter. After graduation from the veterinary technology program, I plan to enter emergency medicine and specialize in this field(emergency & critical care specialization). My interests in veterinary medicine include emergency/critical care, neurology, and I would like to learn more about equine medicine and possibly at some point pursue a career in equine care as well. I reside in Richmond, VA with my wonderful husband, Justin, and our two cats, Lisa & Gandhi. email: ODScislowicz@hotmail.com

I am a Certified Veterinary Technician and have been a member of the veterinary profession for over 24 years. I've used my extensive clinical and managerial experience to become the first veterinary technician to evaluate and accredit veterinary hospitals for the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). The experience of "inspecting" over 1200 hospitals has given me a unique perspective of our profession. Presently, I concentrate my activities as a full-time author and consultant to the profession. My books, The Complete Veterinary Practice Regulatory Compliance Manual and Safety Issues for the Veterinary Hospital Staff are in their fifth editions. I enjoy the reputation of being the veterinary profession's OSHA expert. I am the founder and Director of the OSHA Center on the Veterinary Information Network and the Veterinary Support Personnel Network. I regularly teach an interactive OSHA course on VIN/VSPN (among others). I am the author of many articles dealing with veterinary hospital administration, which have appeared in national publications such as Journal of the AVMA, AAHA Trends, Veterinary Forum, DVM Magazine, The Veterinary Technician and the Practice Journals. I am the founder and Managing Editor of the profession's only safety-specific newsletter, The Veterinary Safety & Health Digest. Email: Phil@safetyvet.com
Oreta Samples, CVT, MPH
As a veterinary technician who has spent the last ten years in an educational institution where veterinary technicians are trained, I can say there is truthfully never a dull moment. I recently completed a Masters Degree in public health and am now working on a Ph.D program on-line with Nova Southeastern in health sciences. I am as you may have guessed by now in addition to being a working vet tech, also a professional student <smile>. I share my life with several cats and dogs and consider everyday a challenge of learning when it comes to veterinary medicine. Email: oreta@vspn.org
Christine Secor, LVT, BS, MSEd.
I was in human dentistry for 18 years when I wanted a change and went to work for our local veterinarian as a receptionist. I then worked as a veterinary assistant and within two years I was back in school obtaining my veterinary technology degree in 1997. I got divorced and moved up to Cortland, New York and obtained my B.S. in Biology and education. In 2003, I applied and was accepted at Cornell full time in the anesthesia department while I worked on my graduate degree in the evenings. I have worked at Cornell ever since with a year off from August 2006 to July 2007. On a personal note, I have a wonderful husband, Alan, 2 cats and a dog all from the SPCA (not the husband). We spend our summer weekends on our boat up at the St. Lawrence River where we cruise around and also scuba dive. Our winters are spent wishing it was summer and we were back on our boat. Alison Seward, VA
I was led to behavior by Mitch, my very aggressive Jack Russell adoptee, whom I almost euthanized shortly after I adopted him at 10 months in 1995. He's 12 years old now, and he's taught me a lot. So have my other behavior case adoptions, always a house full. I have been a veterinary assistant at the Behavior Clinic at the Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania since 1996. I work as part of a team headed by Dr. Ilana Reisner, DVM, DACVB that includes two resident veterinarians, and a tech as well. Since I came to Penn, I have helped expand the role of support personnel in behavior cases. Under the supervision of a clinician, our support personnel are responsible for client education and teaching the client behavior modification techniques, as well as triage for incoming referrals. We also contribute to client follow up with the clinicians. I take courses in Penn's Biological Basis of Behavior major as often as I can, and the neurobiology of behavior is my passion. I attended the 2-week ACVIM neurology course at North Carolina State University in 2003. I take herding lessons with my 2 year old, very fear aggressive, border collie, Blue (my other passion). I learn more about behavior every day from the dogs who have come to live with me. I can be reached at sewarda@vet.upenn.edu.

I graduated from Columbus State College in 1982. I am currently the Secretary of the Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians. I also work part-time for Pfizer Animal Health and teach dentistry part-time at the local veterinary technician school. I am married with an 11-year-old daughter, 2 Labradors, 2 cats, a rabbit, birds and many fish. I love to hunt, camp, garden, cook, read, and I'm an avid Colorado Avalanche fan. Julie Singer, RVT, CVPM
I have had the opportunity to work in the veterinary field for over 30 years, and yes, my career began with cleaning cages in high school. I was hooked and quickly acquired my Registered Veterinary Technician status in 1979, followed by accreditation for my Certified Veterinary Practice Manager status in 2001. In my early years, my experience was with a mixed small/large animal one-doctor practice, then a 24 hour AAHA hospital that included both general and specialty medicine, then on to co-manage three practices with three times the challenges! Currently, I am the Hospital Administrator for an AAHA practice in Houston (www.brittmooreanimalhospital.com). I also enjoy my time spent with Veterinary Practice Consultants (www.v-p-c.com) which gives me the opportunity to meet other practices and speak at seminars about day to day challenges. On a personal note, my passion is horses and I spend most weekends competing at horse shows with "Legacy", a thoroughbred mare with personality plus! VSPN is a great resource of ideas and continuing education for all support staff; it also provides a networking system that can't be beat! Welcome, I look forward to meeting you in the Chat Room, Panel Discussion, or Continuing Education classroom soon. E-mail: jsinger@consolidated.net
Christine Slowiak, CVT, VTS (Anes, ECC)
After 10 yrs+ experience in various general and specialty SA hospitals I have finally (happily) come to the Surgical Referral Service at the Veterinary Specialty Center in Buffalo Grove, IL. I received my VTS in Anesthesia in 2003, and have started preparing for the VTS in ECC for 2006. As a 'Certifiable CE Junkie', I try to complete 40 hours per year and encourage our profession to make the most of services and tools available to advance the veterinary technology field. I sincerely appreciate my colleagues and what they teach me daily on VSPN! I try to round out life outside of veterinary medicine by training with FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security with VMAT, gardening, cooking and spending time with my husband and our 4 legged family. You can contact me on the boards or at ichthy9@hotmail.com
